Susan Kennedy

Susan Kennedy, Kennedy Art Studios, Rochester, MN

As a native Montanan, Susan grew up north of the Benton Lake Wildlife Refuge and lived within the beauty of the far-reaching landscapes. Through inner passion and perseverance, she has continued to paint and draw since childhood. With limited art exposure in rural Montana, she continued to draw from magazines and use dime-store watercolors. She was lucky enough to have some free art lessons on a neighbor nearby. When she reached college level studies, her dream of being an artist never wained, until she was told she had no talent - but looking back it was the lack of technical skills which became her focus.

Over the years, she has continued her dreams by painting and drawing every chance possible in the US and abroad; Norway, England, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. She has attended well as structured classes at the Seattle Art Academy; strictly plein aire in France at the Atelier de Calvisson with Regis Bucket de Tell; Figurative Painting with Darren Kingsley of Studio Incamminati and renowned watercolor artists including Arlene Pech, Judy Morris, Diane Maxey (Scottsdale Art School), Timothy J. Clark, Tony Couch and beloved seascape artist, E. John Robinson.

An original watercolor entitled, “Winter Solace” was selected as a Courage Card for 2007 and was published for five consecutive years supporting the Courage Center, Golden Valley, MN.

In June 2008 and 2009, Susan participated in the Red Wing Art Association’s Plein Air Painting Festival winning the People’s Choice Award for her “St. James Window Dressing” watercolor.

“The Olive Grove” a plein air watercolor from France was selected for the Arts in Healing exhibit at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, in 2009; November 2014 and July 2015, she was honored as one of Mayo Clinic’s Artists with exhibits in the Siebens Bldg., Hage Atrium, Mayo Clinic Rochester.

She is a certified Grumbacher Instructor for Thalo LLC and taught drawing and painting at Michael’s Arts and Crafts for many years as well as teaching privately. She is a member of the Minnesota Watercolor Society. She participated in Art in the Open, Wexford, Ireland in 2018, and the MedCityArt Festival in August, 2024.

The splendor of nature’s ever-changing images are a constant source of inspiration. Each day opens up a new opportunity for changing light in landscapes, never-ending cloudscapes and seascapes that take your breath away. Each painting is a heart-felt impression of passion and adventure in the journey of color harmonies that surround us everyday.

These colors evoke emotion and wonder within the viewer and the artist.

With carefully chosen thin layers of color, Susan takes the viewer on a personal and thought-provoking adventure into her world.
